Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena

The Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena, is just one of the many magnificent building to see in Madrid.  A little different to most of the more traditionally churches and Cathedrals that you may find in many other other cities throughout Spain. Due to the history behind the building of the Cathdedral, the Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena, has is own unique style and architecture.

Catedral de Santa María la Real de la AlmudenaAlthough the building of the Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena actually began in 1893, it was not completed until 15 June 1993, when it was consecrated for worship by the Holy Father Pope John Paul II and a statue to commemorate his visit now stands outside the cathedral. However, prior to the consecration in 1993, the crypt had previously been open for worship in 1911 but building had to be stopped due to the Civil war.

Now the Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena takes its place in the city centre opposite the Royal Palace and is separated by the a lage square ‘Plaza de la Armería’. The Cathedral boasts a wonderful mix of Neoclassic, Neogothic and Neoromanesque architecture.

The Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena, is a mix of both granite and marble and it has two large towers at the entrance and really is a work of both new and traditional architecture. The ground plan is designed in the form of a Latin cross and was designed by Marqués de Cubas.
